This paper evaluates existing explicit deposit insurance systems in the MENA region by benchmarking them to the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision (BCBS) and the International Association of Deposit Insurers (IADI) Core Principles for Effective Deposit Insurance Systems (Core Principles). It also examines and evaluates the views supporting the persistence of blanket government guarantees (both explicit and implicit) in place in a number of MENA countries.
